[ 3 September 2009; 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. ] Virginia Historical Society (VHS) Trustee and Fourth Circuit Judge Roger Gregory will take VHS members behind-the-scenes of this National Historical Landmark which dates to 1858. Now named the Lewis F. Powell, Jr., U.S. Courthouse, it is an impressive example of the Italianate architecture that became popular in this country during the third quarter of the nineteenth century.

[ 4 September 2009; 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. ] Though the city has changed a great deal since the time when Jefferson Davis occupied the executive mansion as President, you can experience various places in the city he would have known by participating in a “Walking Tour of Jefferson Davis’s Richmond,” offered by the Museum of the Confederacy on September 4.

On this day in 1884, The Atlanta Consitution reported an event that occurred in New York on the previous day. Fifteen hundred people gathered in Cooper Union to take part in the inaugural public ceremonies relating to the establishment of a home for disabled ex-confederate soldiers at Richmond, Virginia.

The Museum of Confederacy is exploring the idea of expanding to a statewide system of visitor sites. The museum system would advance the Museum’s educational mission by broadening the reach of its extensive artifact collection.

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park recently unveiled several new displays, including the flag of the Oneida Cavalry carried at Appomattox and jackets worn by Confederate soldiers James Gavin Field and William S. Pilcher.
