In April 1995, a campaign to create a driving tour of Lee’s retreat during the last week of the Civil War was finalized. The tour still is alive, and interested individuals can contact the city of Petersburg for more information.

During the last week of the Civil War, many papers ran articles that detailed the battles fought during the last month of the war. Many reports were published weeks later than the actual battle. But, when it came to the letters that General Lee and Grant sent back and forth to each other during the last two days of the war, it took only days for those missives to be published.

I love research, as I’m constantly learning as I sift through piles of faded papers and barely legible documents. So, when I found this bit of news in The Times Record out of Troy, New York on this day in 1971, I was happy to learn something new. It appears from this news article that General Robert E. Lee never received his citizenship during his lifetime.
