[ 1 November 2009; 1 April 2010; ] Short-term fellowships are awarded for periods of one, two, three or four months to doctoral candidates and postdoctoral scholars from any country working on Jefferson-related projects. At least one fellowship will be reserved for related research topics in African-American History and in archaeology for fellows using the Digital Archaeological Archive of Comparative Slavery.

Between 1820 and 1865, some 3,700 African Americans left Virginia for Liberia, the West African settlement founded by the American Colonization Society (ACS). About one-quarter of these emigrants were free blacks, the rest newly manumitted slaves, most freed upon the condition of their voluntary resettlement in the ACS-governed colony (1820-1847) and independent black republic (1847-present) across the Atlantic. More than two hundred white Virginians emancipated slaves for emigration.

Colonial Williamsburg’s Great Hopes Plantation offers a new family-friendly program 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27. “Pigs to Pork” will provide guests an opportunity to experience meat preservation and preparation in a rural 18th-century setting while emphasizing life and survival on the land and the work and lives of enslaved African Americans.
