The Confederate Troops are returning!
On October 10-11, Appomattox Court House NHP will host the Palmetto Battalion from South Carolina. These re-enactors will be portraying Confederate soldiers and will be available to discuss weapons, uniforms, and everyday soldier life during the Civil War. Throughout the weekend re-enactors will demonstrate military drill and fire historic weapons. Each day at 1:00 p.m. they will also re-enact the stacking of arms, the ceremony in which the Confederates laid down their arms. Other programs will include music and presentations on medicine.
On Saturday, the park will also host author Michael Zucchero, who wrote the book, Loyal Hearts: Histories of American Civil War Canines (available at Amazon through that link). He will speak at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and be available to sign books.
Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is located on Highway 24, 3 miles from Appomattox. The park is open daily from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Entrance fees are $3 per person, or $5 per vehicle. Children 15 and under are free. Specific questions about the programs should be directed to Bert Dunkerly at 434-352-8987 ext. 31.
