(Gen. Stoneman captured the town in the closing months of the war and a 300-man detachment of Gen. Wheeler's calvary had a skirmish here. There is a historical marker at the Historic old Courthouse noting Stoneman's troopers presence before he moved on to Danbury, NC to begin his "Last Raid" through that state. Danbury has one NC Civil War Trails designated site with another just approved by county government. Thanks for any information on designating Martinsville a Va Civil War Trails site.
