Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is pleased to announce a series of events in April to commemorate the 144th anniversary of the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Beginning on April 8th there will be formal programs starting at the park visitor center each day through April 12th. Each day there will be programs beginning in the park visitor center at 10:20 a.m. There will be programs offered each hour, at 20 minutes after the hour through 3:20 p.m.
Programs will be presented by park staff, including park historian Patrick Schroeder, and a guest speaker from the Museum of the Confederacy. Other guest speakers will include Catherine Wright, author of Lee’s Last Casualty: The Life and Letters of Sgt. Robert W. Parker, Second Virginia Cavalry (Voices of the Civil War) . She will present programs on Saturday, April 11 at 11:20 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. Also on April 11th, at 12:20 p.m. and 2:20 p.m., there will be programs by Jeff Toalson, author of No Soap, No Pay, Diarrhea, Dysentery & Desertion: A Composite Diary of the Last 16 Months of the Confederacy from 1864 to 1865
. Both authors will be available for book signings. Also each day, April 8th – 12th, there will be 1st person (1865), living history programs starting at the visitor center throughout the day.
On April 18 and 19, the park will have a living history encampment. Visitors will have a chance to visit a Confederate campsite and learn about the life of a common Civil War soldier. Activities will include cooking, military inspections, and drill. There will be demonstrations of weapons and battle tactics on the site of the last battle. Each day there will also be a stacking of arms ceremony along the stage road, exactly where General Lee’s army stacked arms 144 years ago. Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is located on Highway 24, 3 miles from Appomattox. The park is open daily from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Entrance fees are $3 per person, or $5 per vehicle.
